The Experts Predict!
Six futurists forecast the tech developments that will change business
We asked authorities in the future of business to name the technologies that will change the world over the next decade and beyond. Strap in for a future full of quantum computing and other high-tech wonders.
The most important [new technologies] are definitely 5G, blockchain, cryptocurrency, quantum computing, [and] renewable energy transformation – because we already started to move and we have to move towards sustainable capitalism by the power of data. … Everything must be 100% digitizable, 100% connectable, 100% reachable without any interruption, and 100% transparently sharable.
This kind of infrastructure can only be possible with:
- High speed / broadband internet (5G and over),
- A common decentralized platform (namely blockchain),
- A new monetary / financial system that runs on the blockchain (cryptocurrencies).
- Faster and larger computing / processing capacity (quantum computing)
- More power that can only be supplied by renewable energy technologies.
Without the above five mandatory technologies world can sustain neither business nor social life and nature anymore.

There are two technologies that I would raise above others: quantum computing and synthetic biology.
Quantum computers can solve problems than a best supercomputer in the world cannot in a feasible time. There are huge expectations with quantum computing: it could be used in medicine and material development, it could help to solve climate challenges. … As quantum computers will bring new challenges, they will also bring threats to organizations. They are excellent tools to break traditional encryption. This is why organizations should be prepared for quantum threats already today.
The other promising technology is synthetic biology (SB): It is like extreme gene manipulation. With SB it is possible to create new life forms from scratch. … In the future you would not need any animals to create animal proteins, which is ethically and environmentally sustainable. Biology and synthetic biology could also be used in computing. DNA is actually a very good memory storage.

The age of workplace-experience data is coming fast. Like sharing comments on news stories is one of the most valuable data a news organization has, large enterprises will actively capture the “doing data” of their employees …
“Doing data” focuses on the journey that influenced the outcome [of a project] and made it successful (or not). It helps us capture the actions and reactions to things (like comments on news stories, or steps we took while building a prototype) to get to winning outcomes.
Companies who start building experience data sets now will have the largest, most complex datasets to train AI in the future. Large enterprises like PwC, AT& T, and Caterpillar are now integrating experience data into their workplace. …
You’ll soon be able to better identify what went right and what when wrong – ultimately to learn, improve and succeed faster.

The following are going to be game changers:
1. Super-fast, long-haul travel technologies: While the current “billionaire space race” might appear slightly frivolous to some, the underlying technologies being worked on (from reusable rockets to large pay loads) all add up to the transportation of people at immense speeds across the planet.
2. Voice recognition combined with real-time translation will change the way we interact with our devices, with an IoT enabled world, and with each other.
3. Medical technologies and advances that continue to increase longevity will soon mean that people realize they’re likely to live beyond 100 years old – that will become the new norm. This will have a significant impact on many products and services, and especially change how people view retirement and career planning.

Future tech innovations will transform business [and] markets but more so human beings. The top tech trends include quantum computing, nanotechnology, genetic engineering, AI/human process automation, cognitive augmentation, and health enhancement.
[In particular,] the dramatic enhancement of intelligence, a vast new era of artificial intelligence, and a new computer platform with great agility (quantum encryption) will open new careers and markets.

Business technology over the next decade will be driven by needs for ever-greater levels of transparency – to satisfy ESG [environmental, social, and governance] requirements, provide insight into supply chains, and in general to help the business understand its business.
Beyond that, we will see the arrival of a new generation of tools that emphasize flexibility - imagine a hybrid of Slack, Zoom, and Outlook – so that the whole organization can stay connected, aware, and available. Fortune favors the flexible, and business tech will work to meet their needs.
